Back to Basics

Searching through some archives this weekend, I came across many of my old works that are attached. I used to have a systemized way of going about things. Drawn out, using tools that are accustomed to its space....everything had a mathematical reason for being there.

I now paint with my hands , body....on huge canvases or wood....rarely I approach it with a ruler. I realize after looking at these, that I miss the days of shading and drawing. Preciseness actually may take more genius than abstraction.

I think it will be interesting, to merge a planned space, such as architecture, with the spontaneity of expression. William Kentridge stated, regarding his drawings, “The drawings don’t start with ‘a beautiful mark’. It has to be a mark of something out there in the world. It doesn’t have to be an accurate drawing, but it has to stand for an observation, not something that is abstract, like an emotion.” I hope that in my next painting series, I can go back to the tool of observation, and merge these two spaces into one.

Sun and Rain

I recently photographed the village of Kalapana which was destroyed by Kilauea in the 90s. The village still remains with few residents and homes are up for sale. In contrast, it is a beautiful disturbing site. It questions permanence of what we have, and how easily nature can disrupt. Sometimes the presence of nothing can speak the world of everything.

On Vacation

Currently I am away exploring the Hawaiian Islands. Just arrived and more to come. :)
